It’s time to dive headfirst back into the world of recruitment with a nostalgic twist by comparing it to the unforgettable 80’s TV show, Happy Days. Grab your leather jackets, slick back your hair, and let’s take a trip down memory lane and see how those famous Happy Days moments compare to those ups and downs of working with a recruitment consultant.

1. The Fonzie of Recruitment: The Cool Consultant

First off, every recruitment agency has that one legendary consultant, the Fonzie of the group. They’re the suave, confident, and effortlessly cool expert who can land job placements with a snap of their fingers. Just like Arthur “Fonzie” Fonzarelli, they seem to have all the connections and answers, making them the go-to person for both clients and candidates.

Picture this: You walk into the office, feeling like a nervous Richie Cunningham, and there’s your recruitment consultant, giving you that thumbs-up of assurance. “Eyyy, we got this!” they exclaim, and suddenly, your job hunt doesn’t seem as daunting anymore.

2. Richie Cunningham’s Job Hunt

Remember Richie Cunningham’s constant quest for the perfect date on Happy Days? Well, that’s a lot like job hunting, isn’t it? You’re always on the lookout for the perfect opportunity, but sometimes, it feels like you’re stuck with Potsie and Ralph instead of that dream job.

Recruitment consultants are your personal “matchmakers” in this dating game, helping you find that perfect job match. When Richie finally found the right girl, it was like hitting the jackpot. Similarly, when a consultant finds you the perfect job, it feels like winning the lottery!

3. The Arnold’s Diner of Networking

Arnold’s Diner was the place to be in Happy Days, where everyone gathered to socialise, enjoy milkshakes, and share a laugh. In the recruitment world, networking events are your Arnold’s Diner. It’s where you meet potential employers, fellow job seekers, and, of course, those cool consultants. Being invited to an IFRS Soiree may not sound as appealing as hanging out with The Fonz at Arnold Diner but the long-term benefits are undoubtedly better!

Just like Arnold’s, networking events can sometimes be a bit overwhelming, but they’re essential for making connections. And remember, even Fonzie had to step out of his comfort zone once in a while!

4. Joanie and Chachi: Building Lasting Relationships

Joanie and Chachi’s romance on Happy Days was nothing short of adorable. They started as friends and built a strong relationship over time. Similarly, the best recruitment consultants don’t just find you a job; they help you build a career.

Your consultant is your Joanie or Chachi, guiding you through the ups and downs of your professional life. They’re invested in your success and are there to support you every step of the way. It’s not just about a job; it’s about a lasting partnership.

5. “Sit on It!” – Dealing with Rejection

Ah, the famous catchphrase of Happy Days, “Sit on it!” When you face rejection in the job market, you might want to take a cue from this phrase. Rejection is a part of the job hunt, and sometimes, you just have to brush it off and move forward.

Your consultant will be there to provide words of encouragement, reminding you that rejection is just a temporary setback. So, when life gives you a rejection letter, just say, “Sit on it!” and keep on looking for that dream job.

6. Avoiding the “Jumping the Shark” Moment

In the TV world, “jumping the shark” refers to that moment when a show takes an unexpected turn for the worse, losing its original charm and audience appeal. In recruitment, you definitely want to steer clear of any “jumping the shark” moments.

Imagine you’ve been working with a consultant who was initially fantastic, just like the early seasons of Happy Days. They were finding you promising job leads, and you felt like the Fonz strutting your stuff. But suddenly, things took a bizarre turn, and you found yourself questioning their judgment and expertise. It’s like Happy Days when Fonzie literally jumped a shark on water skis—an iconic but utterly absurd moment.

Recruitment, like any relationship, relies on trust and consistency. If your consultant starts making wild promises or taking you in a direction that doesn’t align with your career goals, it might be time to reevaluate the partnership. Don’t let your recruitment experience “jump the shark” by settling for anything less than a professional, reliable consultant.

Remember, just like Happy Days eventually regained its charm after that shark-jumping moment, you too can bounce back from a recruitment misstep. Trust your instincts and find a consultant who keeps your job hunt on the right track without any shark-infested waters in sight!

In the world of recruitment, Happy Days can teach us valuable lessons about perseverance, the importance of strong relationships, and the occasional need to embrace rejection with humor. So, whether you’re a job seeker or a recruitment consultant, remember to keep the spirit of Happy Days alive in your journey. After all, in the words of the Fonz, “Eyyy, you got this!”

So, folks, as you navigate the roller-coaster of job hunting, remember that your recruitment consultant is here to make your “Recruitment Days” a little happier, one job placement at a time. Happy hunting!

The Recruitment A-Team – which recruiters are you working with? https://harcourtmatthews.com/21266/the-recruitment-a-team-which-recruiters-are-you-working-with/ Fri, 25 Aug 2023 08:11:14 +0000 https://harcourtmatthews.com/?p=21266 Its been a few weeks since I added to the blog (we’ll blame holidays and sheer laziness for that) but I’m pleased to publish the latest in my 80’s nostalgia recruitment comparison blog – I think I need to come up with a catchier title! Its been a few weeks since I added to the blog (we’ll blame holidays and sheer laziness for that) but I’m pleased to publish the latest in my 80’s nostalgia recruitment comparison blog – I think I need to come up with a catchier title!

Today, it’s The A-Team! I would like to be clear that this will be the original The A-Team, not the 2010 film remake. Whilst I do really like that film and I felt the characters stayed remarkably close to the originals, this is an 80’s nostalgia blog so only Mr. T et al will be considered here!

Recruitment consultants can be a mixed bunch of characters – some memorable, some less so. But have you ever thought about which A-Team character your recruitment consultant compares to? Of course you haven’t, but that’s what we’re going to do now.

Prepare to meet characters who not only resemble the beloved show’s icons but also have classic catchphrases to match. Let’s roll out the black van and get started!

1. John “Hannibal” Smith: The Mastermind Mentor

“I love it when a plan comes together.”

Leading the pack is Hannibal Smith, the strategic mastermind behind The A-Team. He’s the one who orchestrates intricate plans, just as a skilled recruitment consultant designs a job-seeking strategy tailored to your unique skills. Like Hannibal, your consultant always loves it when a well-laid plan leads to your dream job finally coming together.

2. Templeton “Faceman” Peck: The Charismatic Connector

“I’m just here to facilitate the inevitable.”

Meet Face, the charming and smooth-talking member of the team. Much like him, the “Face” of your recruitment journey is the consultant who bridges connections between you and potential employers. They navigate through the networking maze with finesse, ensuring that your talent inevitably finds its ideal destination.

3. Bosco Albert “B.A.” Baracus: The Confidence Builder

“I ain’t getting’ on no plane, fool!”

B.A. Baracus, the tough yet tenderhearted mechanic of the group, mirrors the steadfast recruitment consultant who knows how to handle your anxieties and uncertainties. When you’re hesitating to take that next big step in your career, your “B.A.” is there, reassuring you that you’ve got this, even if it feels like you’re about to board a plane without your consent.

4. H.M. “Howling Mad” Murdock: The Creative Maverick

“I’m not crazy. I just have a unique way of thinking.”

Murdock, the wild card of The A-Team, brings unconventional thinking and a touch of eccentricity. In your job hunt, this consultant dares to think outside the cubicle, presenting you with opportunities you might have overlooked. They prove that a dash of creativity can make your career path as unique as Murdock’s approach to sanity.

5. Frankie “Dishpan” Santana: The Behind-the-Scenes Specialist

“If it ain’t got no grease, it ain’t gonna work.”

Behind every successful team, there’s someone who ensures the machinery runs smoothly. Frankie “Dishpan” Santana exemplifies the meticulous recruiter who knows that every job application needs its own kind of grease – a tailored approach that ensures a perfect fit between you and your potential employer.

6. Hunt Stockwell: The Shrewd Strategist

“The only currency I deal in is information.”

Enter Hunt Stockwell, the shrewd strategist who aids The A-Team from the shadows. In our recruitment realm, Stockwell represents the recruiter driven by information and connections. However, let’s learn from his character’s evolution – while data is essential, recruiters must also value genuine care for candidates’ and clients’ aspirations.

7. Amy “Triple A” Allen: The Empathetic Ally

“I’m here to make sure the job gets done, but I’m also here to make sure you’re all right.”

Meet Amy Allen, the empathetic ally who balances duty with concern for the team’s well-being. She embodies the ideal consultant who understands that candidates and clients are more than just numbers. Just as Amy ensures the job gets done while prioritizing her team’s welfare, your consultant should prioritize your interests in tandem with achieving recruitment goals.

8. Colonel Lynch: Dispelling the Myth

“I want these guys caught, but I want ’em brought in alive. We’re not murderers.”

And now, a character to dispel a common myth. Colonel Lynch, often portrayed as the antagonist, becomes a fitting representation of the “cv flinger” misconception. Just as Colonel Lynch misrepresents the military’s intentions, the “cv flinger” recruiter misrepresents the industry by not investing in candidates’ or clients’ genuine success. Instead, they seem intent of ruining the reputation of those around them.

Conclusion

In the thrilling world of recruitment, finding your dream job is an adventure that demands a team as diverse and skilled as The A-Team themselves. From the mastermind orchestrator to the creative maverick, each consultant plays a vital role in making your career aspirations a reality.

So, as you navigate the white-collar wilderness, remember the wisdom of The A-Team and their knack for turning challenges into triumphs. With a dash of humor, a sprinkle of strategy, and a whole lot of tenacity, you’ll conquer the recruitment landscape just as they did their missions. And who knows, with the right team by your side, you might even get to say, “I love it when a job offer comes together!”

Stay tuned for more installments in our ’80s TV show series, where we uncover the parallels between pop culture and your professional endeavors.

As recruitment consultants often get bad press, we thought we could write a poem to help remind us of their qualities we all love so much!!

In the realm of jobs, where chaos resides,
Recruitment consultants take us for rides.
With their calls and emails, they cast their net,
But sometimes, communication? We haven’t met!

Oh, recruitment agents, elusive birds in flight,
Your phone rings and rings, but you’re nowhere in sight.
You promise updates, but they’re lost in the haze,
Like a fax machine lost in a bygone craze.

Their knowledge of jobs, we often question,
As they match engineers with a love for confection.
“Sure, a chef in an office, what could go wrong?”
But we’d rather not whip up spreadsheets all day long!

“Take this role, it’s perfect,” they persistently plead,
But it’s not what we want; it’s not what we need.
They’re like car salesmen with charisma untamed,
Selling ice to Eskimos, oh, they’re never ashamed!

So, here’s to the consultants, with puns and jest,
We chuckle and grin, though sometimes we’re stressed.
They may have their quirks, but let’s not forget,
Without their help, some great jobs we may not have met!

Thanks to ChatGPT for help in writing this poem!
